Job Summary

This role develops expert-level capabilities in the testing of large power transformers and associated components during Final Acceptance Testing (FAT). The Test Technician plays a critical role in validating product performance, safety, and compliance with industry standards through a wide range of electrical, dielectric, and performance tests conducted in a high-voltage laboratory environment.

Testing activities include control wiring verification, low- and medium-voltage electrical testing, high-voltage dielectric testing, and performance validation to ensure compliance with guaranteed electrical, thermal, and acoustic requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform comprehensive testing on large power transformers in accordance with IEEE standards and high-voltage safety requirements, including NFPA 70E compliance, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and fall protection when working at heights.

  • Conduct control wiring and instrumentation verification by following schematics, test procedures, standard operating procedures, and equipment manuals.

  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot electronic and PLC-based instrumentation.

  • Identify and correct wiring discrepancies.

  • Execute low- and medium-voltage electrical testing (up to 10 kV) in manufacturing and test environments, including resistance testing, capacitance, Doble, Hipot, CT testing, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA).

  • Set up and dismantle transformers and test equipment for dielectric and performance testing.

  • Perform transformer performance testing, including loss measurements and sound level testing at high current and voltage levels.

  • Conduct high-voltage dielectric testing such as lightning impulse, switching surge, applied voltage, induced overvoltage, and partial discharge testing at extreme voltage levels.

  • Document, investigate, and support resolution of nonconformities, including segregation of affected materials or components.

    Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
    • Advanced understanding of electrical theory, particularly as it applies to high-voltage power systems.

    • Strong working knowledge of high-voltage safety practices and compliance standards.

    • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.

    • Proficiency with electrical test instruments such as multimeters and oscilloscopes.

    • Strong mathematical skills, including algebra, scientific notation, and unit conversions.

    • Ability to interpret test results, identify out-of-tolerance conditions, and document findings accurately.

    • Demonstrated troubleshooting skills and root-cause analysis using established technical procedures and engineering guidance.

    • Experience documenting and managing nonconforming materials or test results.

    • Commitment to workplace organization, cleanliness, and preventive maintenance using 5S principles.

    • High attention to detail in testing, documentation, and data entry.

    • Proficiency with Windows-based applications and electronic data systems.

    • Effective verbal and written communication skills in English, including interaction with engineers, peers, and customers.

    Preferred Qualifications
    • Experience interpreting and troubleshooting electrical schematics and control wiring.

    • Hands-on experience performing high-voltage testing on heavy electrical equipment such as power transformers or switchgear.

    • Experience testing three-phase power systems.

    • Familiarity with diagnostics, automation, or troubleshooting using LabVIEW and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).

    Education & ExperienceRequired
    • Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Engineering, High Voltage Engineering, Utilities Engineering, Electromagnetics, or a related field
      OR

    • Minimum of 2 years of experience in transformer factory acceptance testing or field commissioning.
