Literacy Coach Consultant (Part-time Contract Per Diem Position)

Location: New York City:  This is an on-site, field-based/work-from-home position and the successful candidate must reside in the New York City area.

About the position:

The Literacy Coach Consultant is a contract per diem role focused on providing job-embedded professional development and instructional coaching for teachers in grades K–2 and 3–5. This position is designed for experienced educators with a strong foundation in the Science of Reading, structured literacy frameworks, and diagnostic reading assessments.

The ideal candidate will have taught and implemented one or more of the following programs:

  • UFLI Foundations
  • Heggerty
  • FunDations
  • Really Great Reading
  • Preventing Academic Failure (PAF)
  • Phonics for Reading
  • Orton Gillingham-based programs

This role is central to CSAS’s mission of transforming instructional practices and accelerating literacy outcomes for diverse student populations, including English Language Learners and students with disabilities.

Key Responsibilities

Job-Embedded Literacy Coaching and Professional Development

  • Build strong, collaborative relationships with school leaders, teachers, support staff, and paraprofessionals.
  • Facilitate onsite and virtual coaching support aligned to the district's adopted core and supplemental literacy programs.
  • Deliver high-quality, strengths-based one-on-one coaching, small group coaching, and grade-level team support.
  • Model evidence-based instructional practices and structured literacy routines.
  • Co-plan lessons and support the implementation of effective differentiation strategies, formative assessments, and targeted interventions.
  • Observe classroom instruction and analyze student work to assess instructional impact and provide actionable feedback.
  • Lead reflective coaching conversations to guide teachers in refining practice and increasing instructional efficacy.
  • Use screening tools, diagnostic assessments, and progress monitoring data (e.g., Acadience) to inform instruction and intervention planning.
  • Integrate core and supplemental curriculum materials with high fidelity, aligned to the Science of Reading.

Qualifications

Education and Training

  • Master’s degree or higher in literacy, special education, curriculum and instruction, early childhood education, or a related field.
  • Deep knowledge and demonstrated application of the Science of Reading and structured literacy.
  • Training and/or certification in structured literacy approaches (e.g., LETRS, Orton Gillingham, Wilson, Reading First) strongly preferred.

Teaching Experience

  • Minimum of 5+ years of successful classroom teaching experience in grades K–5.
  • Direct classroom experience implementing one or more of the following: UFLI, Heggerty, FunDations, PAF, Phonics for Reading, Really Great Reading, or Orton Gillingham-based programs.
  • Proven success accelerating reading outcomes for Title I students, English Language Learners, and students with IEPs.

Instructional Coaching and Facilitation

  • At least 3+ years of experience in instructional coaching or professional development roles within a school or district setting.
  • Strong facilitation, communication, and adult learning skills.
  • Demonstrated success guiding educators through the coaching cycle to improve instruction and student achievement.

Additional Requirements

  • Candidates must reside within the New York tri-state area and willing to work in all 5 boroughs.
  • Due to conflict of interest, we cannot hire current NYC Department of Education employees. You must be separated from the NYC Department of Education for 1+ years in order to be considered for this position.
  • Must be fingerprinted and processed through the NYC DOE PETS system (if assigned to NYC public schools).

Time Commitment and Engagement

  • Weekly schedules are based on customer demand.
  • Each engagement is usually scheduled during the regular school hours.

Required Training

  • You must participate in, and successfully complete, a paid 2 week onboarding and orientation training program (up to 40 hours weekly). 
  • Attendance and participation in ongoing professional learning beyond orientation.
